Q: Even though I have just a couple of trees, being in Kansas wind and at the end of a street, I get huge drift piles of leaves against my fence. I do not need the blower but only the vac/mulcher capability. I got rid of my two cycle so for 4 cycle I was leaning towards the Cub Cadet BV428. However it has plastic and not metal blades and you seem to like the mulching of the Husqvarna 2 cycle better. There will not be any twigs in the drift and I will want to put the mulch on my garden. Based on the above what would be the pros and cons for each model? And your recommendation.
by Russell Strader from Kansas on December 08, 2013

A: Russell,

If you are really talking huge leaf piles, I am not sure that a hand held vacuum option is the best choice for you. You may spend more time emptying your mulch bag than actual vacuuming. Also, you have to make sure you are vacuuming in drier conditions or the leaves will just bend and not shred.

If you do want to go hand held, I feel the Husqvarna would do a much more efficient job than the Cub Cadet, but if you don't put quality gas and oil, that 2-cycle is going to be a rough start.

Q: Your review states this unit is light. 20 lbs. is twice the weight of other units. Reviews say heavy. Which is it?
by Joe from Pennsylvania on December 02, 2013

A: Joe,

I did that review a while ago where most of the competitive models were right around that weight. It is a bit lighter when just used as a blower, and I still feel the when used as a vacuum, the strap takes a bit off of that load as well.

Q: I have been using an Echo leaf vac for about 5 years. It was alright but got jammed a lot when I pulled up a piece of wood chip. Otherwise it worked quite well but that part was quite frustrating. As it is not starting, I decided it was time for a replacement. After reading a number of reviews I chose the Echo ES250. I was sorely dissapointed. It worked worse! It hardly mulched the leaves. Can you tell me what the best hand held leaf vac mulcher is? I do not use the blower.
by Rolfe from Illinois on November 27, 2013

A: Rolfe,

I prefer the mulching system Husqvarna has on the 125BVX:

Husqvarna 125 BVX

They have steel blades along with the impeller to process the debris even further. I am also a big fan of the power in the engine.

Q: Hi Joe, I have a very long driveway, about 2/20's of a mile, and am looking for a leaf blower with capability to mulch and vacuum the leaves at the end of the job
by Jeff from North Carolina on November 09, 2013

A: Jeff,

I feel like we are talking about 528 feet give or take and that is huge. Depending on your leave coverage you may want to invest in some other mulching options.

A blower/vacuum that you walk behind would give you the power and capabilities you need in tackling a larger than life clean up chore.

Q: I want a 4 cycle leaf vac equivalent to an electric Black and Decker 2500 leaf hog. Is the Cub Cadet BV428 a good leaf vac?

Where does the bag attach?

by Patrick Wrobel from New York on November 03, 2013

A: Partick,

I feel you will find the BV428 a equivalent to the electric leaf hog in style and ease of use, and even superior in its power capabilities.

the Vacuum bag attaches to the blower's outlet, which in vacuum mode gets installed where the impeller door is on the opposite side of the picture above.
by Joe, Product Expert
Q: I need to pick a leave vacuum/mulcher for a PTA compost system. We will mulch large quantities of bagged leaves with sticks and have no need for blowing. Requirements: Sturdy, $200 plus is ok if reliable, fewer jams etc,. easy to use, not terribly loud, I thought a stand up model until someone said to get a blower/vac
by Philip Davis from New York on October 09, 2013

A: Philip,

A handheld blower/vac truly is only beneficial with smaller amounts of leaf coverage. Also, the leaves have to be in more of a dry condition or the impeller in the vacuum will not reduce them in shreds. They basically just bend and clog. A large amount of leaves could be quite the nightmare in damp conditions. The impeller in a handheld would not be able to handle sticks of any kind.

A walk behind is a solid choice for large area leaf coverage, but we do not have any close to a $200 price range. If you would like to cont me and discuss the models I feel that would help you, please call me at 800-710-7499 Ext. 133.
by Joe, Product Expert
Q: What kinda blade does this have metal or plastic
by Kodie from Alabama on February 11, 2013

A: Kodie - the impeller blade on the Cub Cadet BV428 is a high impact polymer material. It is not metal.

The Cub Cadet BV428 hand held leaf blower delivers professional grade performance at a Do-It-Yourself price. Loaded with features, this leaf blower can handle pretty much anything your yard can can throw at you in terms of clean-up.

The Cub Cadet BV428 is powered by a 25cc, 4-cycle engine - so you don't need to pre-mix the gas and oil. The engine has a noise reducing design, and produces up to 150mph air velocity. You'll be able to clean-up leaves, grass clippings and other yard debris in... more

Good Value
I purchased this unit to replace a Sears Craftsman 2-cycle machine which stopped working. The Craftsman unit was always difficult to start and became more so over the 13 years I used it. The Cub Cadet leaf blower started on the first pull and continued to do so after several start stop cycles. I enjoy not having to prepare the gas/oil mix. I encountered no issue with the engine exhausting/leaking oil as I read in some reviews. I particularly like the variable speed trigger and cruise control... more

Great Leaf Blower, So So Price
This is a very powerful blower. Only reason not 5 star was only had it one month. Never had an easier starting piece of equipment and it is much quieter than my old Homelight 2 cycle. Less stinky exhaust too!

I was a little upset that when I went to register with Cub Cadet, they had the same blower on their site for $20 less. Emailed Leaf Blowers Direct. They said "we try to be competitive price wise" but did not offer to match the price. I would check around for price.
Pros: Quiet, Light Weight, I'd Buy It Again

Decent Blower
This leaf blower is plenty powerful, but be prepared to have sore wrists and arms after using. It is heavy and a little cumbersome. The blower also spit hot oil out all over my pants and sidewalk. Maybe that's normal? I would still recommend this product. Just use it in short time intervals to save your muscles!
Pros: Easy To Use, Durable, Features, Leaks Oil
Cons: Heavy

Excellent Product
I bought this blower around June/July of 2013. Thus far it has performed well. It is plenty powerful enough for clearing leaves and yard debris. I used a Toro electric plug in unit before and it took forever...the 4 cycle Cub Cadet cut my time in half...maybe even more. My biggest complaint about this unit is the weight, it is VERY heavy.

If you don't want to deal with oil and gas mixtures which can go bad easily, then this product is for you! However, you NEED to break this product in... more

Excellent Leaf Blower
Did my research to find a good leaf blower. Shopped all local stores, but the quality wasn't as good as the Cub Cadet. Was hard to find one in stock at dealers. I guess many other people wanted the same one this fall. But was able to order one through Leaf Blowers Direct. The price was good and shipping was fast. Assembly was easy, and just had to add oil (came in package), and gas. Blower started on second pull and fired up. Has run perfect since, and is surprisingly easy to pull over... more

This Thing Sucks And Blows...in The Best Way Possible!
After reading every review on this website and others, I decided to buy this Cub Cadet Leaf Blower/Vac. It has far exceeded my expectations. I have a house on a half acre lot in a 30 year old neighborhood full of oak trees. My leaf collecting time has been reduced by 80%. With this blower/vac my 8-10 hour (all day) raking & bagging job can be done in 2 hours. I didn't even buy this tool for the mulching capability but it does such a good job of breaking down the leaves that I use the... more

Cub Cadet Leaf Blower
I was really disapointed in the new 4 cycle leaf blower. Within 15 minutes of putting it to work it was leaking engine oil on me as I vacuumed. Ruined my jeans but worse I can't even use the product because of the oil leak. I don't know if it has a gasket problem from original manufacturing or what. Just very disappointing
