Ryobi Ry08420 Back Pack Blower Review
Back pack blowers are normally for the pro. You see them in use by professional landscape pros all the time. So why not have one designed just for the home owner? Well Ryobi has done just that with the RY08420 back pack blower. Just from looking at the unit you can tell this is no ordinary back pack blower. The air tube is sideways which gives the air more of a direct path resulting in more velocity. It puts out 185 mph and 510 CFM from its powerful 42 cc engine.

The RY08420 is also... more

Great, Affordable Blower!
This definitely does the job for doing lawns part time. It is semi-easy to start and always does the job. Just a couple of pointers. The blower is not very efficient because of the power so be prepared to spend a little more on gas. Also, always use ear protection on this as the engine is very close to your ears and very very loud.
Pros: Easy To Use, Price, Reliable, High Quality
Cons: Heavy

Lesson Learned - You Get What You Paid For!
Bought it just a little over a year ago, worked fine for the first year, then it just stopped, and would not start no matter what! Called a repair service center near me, as soon as he heard it was a Royobi, he said not worth fixing. DO NOT BUY THIS. I learned my lesson not to try to save a few dollars now i ended up wasting $200 buck away.

I wish I had read the reviews on this product prior to purchase. If I get it to run, once it is turned off to refill, can't start it. If I wait for a few hours, it might start. The reviews reflect exactly the performance of this piece of junk. Shame on Ryobi. Ans shame on Home Depot for selling it.
Cons: Unreliable, Difficult To Use, Doesn't run consistently

it was really easy to put together! i used true fuel 501 ethanol free gas and oil mix ready to run. i was unhappy because for 6 hours of off and on use i had to use 6 32 fl. oz bottles at almost 6$ a bottle. i had a serious problem with restarting the engine in between fill ups! i had to pull off the case and remove the air filter and the small metal plate so that i could spray starter fluid into the carb.

In the directions they recommend pulling the spark plug and replacing it if will not... more
Pros: Price, Light Weight, Poweful
Cons: Annoying Plate Over Carb, Had To Spay Starter Fluid In Between Fill Ups, Expensive To Run Sucks Up Fuel

Unfortunate
I used this product for only one year. I did use it frequently (2/week) and would go for :30-:35 without significant issues. The only issue was the extension would come off and the clamp screw stripped.

I used the 50:1 mix that was prepared and canned for the first 10 months. I then switched to my own mix which I also used on a 20 inch Husqvarna chainsaw and Echo weed whacker.

The engine seized one day and that was all. Since I moved to a new house in the interim, I misplaced the receipt and... more

Don't Waste Your Time
I bought new at Home Depot because it was the cheapest backpack blower they had. Used it once and couldn't get it to start again. I'm taking it back today after owning it for 3 days. Pure junk.

Absolute Junk
I bought one of these from Home Depot about 6 months ago when I got it home and put it together it wouldn't fire so I took it back and got a new one. Great news my newer one worked for almost 2 weeks and then the engine just quit mid blow.

I have not gotten it started again. If I can do one thing right by leaving this review it's to help you save your money and buy anything but one of these. Absolutely junk.

Do Not Buy
Bought one back in November. Didn't use it till April the following year. Used it twice and it stopped working. It's been in the shop now for going on three weeks waiting on parts. Called Ryobi and told them the problem all they said was it is under warranty. Doesn't do me any good if it's in the shop. Thought they would let me have a new one. Guess I thought wrong. Will never buy another Ryobi product

Buy A Quality Blower, Not This One
Used twice, now won't start. Likely scored piston as rope feels pretty limp like no compression. Seems to be a common problem with this model. Spend $100 more and get a Husky.

You get what you pay for :)
Pros: Price
Cons: Unreliable, Durability

Nice Blower, But...
... but nearly unserviceable. For example, despite instructions to occasionally inspect the air filter, there are no instructions on how to actually get to it. I should not have to completely disassemble it to do that, and you pretty much have to do that to get the housing off.
Pros: Price
Cons: Bad Instructions, Maintainability

Within a year of purchasing I had to send it to the shop to have the carburetor cleaned and the switch on the handle fixed. Then the coil went out and I've been waiting for two months on a back ordered coil! The summer is almost gone and I've still got Pine straw and cones to blow. Will I have it back in time to blow leaves? WHO KNOWS!
Pros: Price, Easy To Use, Light Weight
Cons: Low Quality, Unreliable

420 Backpack Blower
Last summer I bought a Ryobi backpack blower. ...powerful and easy to operate...just drop it off at the shop after 30 minutes use ..and suddenly it started studdering...called the 800 # told them the situation..the primer wasn't priming the gas...

took it to home depot where I always take my Ryobi tools to get repaired...only one thing though... It seems as though the product may last or work up to maybe a year or two... then I have to get them repaired.

Maybe it's just my luck....don't... more

Don't Buy It!
I bought this blower last fall. It worked fine for blowing the leaves. This year I used it once for blowing grass clippings. I had to duct tape the blowing tubes to keep it together but, it worked. I just tried to blow the leaves this year and it would turn off every time I would depress the trigger. What a piece of junk. For the money, it should last for more than a season.

Worthless
I bought this unit during the winter. It sat in the box until this summer.
Used it I noticed it kept cutting out and I would have to restart .
Second use it started up and then stopped and would not restart.

Took it to home Deport they said it only had a 30 day warranty, went to HD repair they called me and said
The inside cylinders were scored and no fuel to the cylinder it would be $178 to fix. I asked the person if I could talk to anyone about this and she said no.

Service was as... more
