  7 Questions
Q: Is the bag heavy duty, or will it last only a year
by Jim from Texas on December 08, 2013

A: Jim,

I feel the bag will stand up to residential use for 3-4 seasons if you take care of the machine and it's components. It's made from a heavy duty nylon.

Q: how do you attach the leaf blower
by Barbara from Connecticut on November 21, 2013

A: Barbara,

Below I have inserted a link to the owners manual for the Toro Ultra Electric Leaf Blower/ Vacuum. This unit is easily assembled in just a few steps. If you have further questions on the assembly of the leaf blower, you may contact Toro directly at (888) 384-9939.

If we can be of further assistance, please don't hesitate to ask. Thank you and have a great day!

Q: What kind of outdoor cord should I use with this blower?
by Paul from Minnesota on November 20, 2013

A: Paul,

Your cord gauge and length is outlined in the owner's manual on Page 3:

Extension Cord Length Minimum Wire Gage (A.W.G.)

100 ft = 14 gauge
150 ft = 12 gauge

Q: I just purchased mod.51609 leaf blower / mulcher
It is a TORO
My question : I have a large gravel area & driveway.
Is this going to be a problem?

by MARTY KLIER from Oregon on November 12, 2013

A: Marty,

Depends on what you mean by problem. I feel the Toro 51609 is a powerful enough blower for most residential applications, but if you are pushing the 45 minute mark with the blower, take a break and let the unit cool down for about 10 to 20 minutes. Your blower will thank you by lasting longer.
by Marissa, Product Expert

Q: I am looking for a blower/vacuum (preferably electric) that is powerful enough to pickup locust tree pods. Would the Toro 51609 do this.
by Verlin Blum from Idaho on November 03, 2013

A: Verlin,

Locust Pods are rather large and from what I can remember the skin is either crisp and hard when dry, or quite leathery when fresh.

You are not going to be able to find any type of handheld vacuum that could handle these pods. You would have to invest in a nice tow or walk behind sweeper, or a pretty pricy litter/lawn vacuum.

Q: which is better to move leaves from grass and bushes

Black and Decker BV3800 12 amp or Toro Ultra 51609

What is your opinion about Husqvarna 125B ?

by Gustv Freedman from Massachusetts on November 02, 2013

A: Gustav,

I feel you will have a more success using the Black and Decker BV3800 over the TORO 51609 moving leaves from your grass to your bushes. The main enemy of the corded units is the thinking that since these units are corded, they will run forever. You have to give them a bit of a break to cool down.

I am a huge fan of the Husqvarna 125B. It is lightweight, and powerful. It really makes a perfect residential gas blower option.
by Marissa, Product Expert

Q: Consumer Reports recommneds this blower which has been improved over its predecessors. Are there any more problems with burned out motors with the latest version of the 51609 model? Would you recommend this blower or is there another one you would highly recommend for a small property? Thanks.
by Bernadette Gill from New Jersey on October 05, 2013

A: Bernadette,

If you legitimately have a smaller residential property, this Toro blower works great. I haven't heard too many issues about this blower at all, and as long as you give the blower about a 20 minute rest every 45 minutes of use, you shouldn't have any problem with the machine overheating.

Many people treat these machines like their gasoline counterparts and will over run them. Let this unit cool and it will last.

Blows Them Away!
This product not only blows away the leaves and other yard debris, but the competition also!

Before making my purchase, I researched several review sites and came away with the knowledge that I would select this model.

I have used other electric leaf blower/vacuums and came away unimpressed with their performance. Not so with this model! It performs as promised and with power to spare.

The attachments are easy to use and the reverse function of blower to vac is quick and easy.

It's Not Your Daddy's Snow Blower
Why did I wait till the old one broke? Toro learned a lot from the older model I owned. The rotor is made of metal, so you can vacuum up leaves from the bushes without fear a small twig would break it. Yes, I did damage the old one and stopped vacuuming.

The blower air comes out flat (not round like the old one) so it blows over more surface which is what you really need. The smaller attachments allow for higher blowing speeds, while the largest opening will blow leaves off a larger area to... more

Pretty Much As Advertised
I don't use the vacuum side much. The blower is okay for leaves and drying my just washed car. I was hoping for more speed and volume of air. It's maybe a little better that my old blower that was advertised as 115MPH.

Fantastic
I used it yesterday for the first time and was very impressed with the power of the blower. The vacuum portion mulches the leaves beautifully. I'm in my late sixties and only five feet tall.

I didn't want to do endless hours of raking leaves and picking them up again this year. This equipment was an excellent purchase and I would highly recommend it to anyone not wanting to have to be bothered with gas operated equipment or manual raking. I would rate this a 10 on a scale of 1 - 10.

Works As Advertised
So far so good on both blower and vacuum functions. Just don't expect it to blow or vacuum up wet leaves that are clinging to a wet wood deck. For that purpose, a wire rake or stiff push broom are better. The vac function turns dry leaves into confetti. Pretty impressive.

Great Blower/vac. Poor Quality Motor.
My Toro electric blower/vac is just 2 years old and has around 15 or less total hours on it. After blowing leaves for just over an hour a few days ago, the motor started to smell hot. I turned the blower off to let it cool & now it will not start again. Checked blower & there was nothing blocking the intake. Its a great product with a poor quality motor.
Pros: Features, Light Weight, Easy To Use, Quiet
Cons: Motor Burned Out After Only Around 12hrs Of Total Use

I Need A Debris Vacum Also.
I bought the leaf blower because it both blew the leaves off the porch and driveway and vacumed the leaves out of the enclosed atrium. I cannot understand the instructions for having it as a leaf vacum and able to clean up an enclosed area.

My wife passed away and I have had recent strokes. I cannot figure out to have as a vacum cleaner for the enclosed area. Do yo have simple instructions to covert the leaf blower to a vacum?

Thanks in advance,
Cons: Bad Instructions

Best Corded Blower Availible
I previously had the earlier version of this blower, the model 51591. I used it extensively for 10 years, as both a blower and vac. At one point I had to replace the impeller, but that was about it. Early this year the small plastic tab that actuates the safety switch for the impeller cover broke, and then later the motor failed, so it was finally time to replace it. I no longer use the vacuum function very much, though it worked very well, but I thought it was more efficient just to rake, so... more

I love how you can lower the speed to pile up the leaves easy. The vacuum is powerful and I love how it mulches it up. The bag holds more leaves than I thought it would. This is the best lawn product I have ever bought.

Very Pleased!!!
After raking leaves for weeks and got tired of raking, I purchase another brand and was highly irritated in attempting to put the vacuum/blower together. It seemed like I vacuumed over an area for several minutes and picked up hardly anything!! Frustrated I went to Home Depot and looked at the Toro blower vacuum and could not believe the price for such a quality item. I purchased this unit and within 1 hour did over 3/4's of my lawn. I have no complaints with this item,
Pros: Easy To Use, Fast, High Quality, This Far Exceeded My Expectations After Buying Black Decker
Cons: I Have Not Found Any Cons

Stopped By Pine Cones!
I have a white pine tree. When I vacuum, the pine cones stop up the vacuum. I had the old gas Toro. This one looks the same, but it's not! I read the manual and it clearly states, DO NOT vacuum rocks or PINE cones!

Can you buy a similar one that will work?

The Toro blower and vacuum are strong and will do the job, if you stay away from the pine cones!

Dennis,
For larger debris like pine cones, we recommend using a lawn sweeper (tow-behind ideally) or a larger walk-behind or tow-behind litter vacuum. Hand vacuums are generally designed for leaves, grass clippings, and other small debris of this sort.

If you would like to speak with us in more detail about a model that's best suited for your needs, give us a call at (888) 560-6929 or take a look at our Lawn Vacuum Buyer's Guide.
