  7 Questions
Q: Is the bag heavy duty, or will it last only a year
by Jim from Texas on December 08, 2013

A: Jim,

I feel the bag will stand up to residential use for 3-4 seasons if you take care of the machine and it's components. It's made from a heavy duty nylon.
by Joe, Product Expert
Q: how do you attach the leaf blower
by Barbara from Connecticut on November 21, 2013

A: Barbara,

Below I have inserted a link to the owners manual for the Toro Ultra Electric Leaf Blower/ Vacuum. This unit is easily assembled in just a few steps. If you have further questions on the assembly of the leaf blower, you may contact Toro directly at (888) 384-9939.

If we can be of further assistance, please don't hesitate to ask. Thank you and have a great day!

Q: What kind of outdoor cord should I use with this blower?
by Paul from Minnesota on November 20, 2013

A: Paul,

Your cord gauge and length is outlined in the owner's manual on Page 3:

Extension Cord Length Minimum Wire Gage (A.W.G.)

100 ft = 14 gauge
150 ft = 12 gauge

Q: I just purchased mod.51609 leaf blower / mulcher
It is a TORO
My question : I have a large gravel area & driveway.
Is this going to be a problem?

by MARTY KLIER from Oregon on November 12, 2013

A: Marty,

Depends on what you mean by problem. I feel the Toro 51609 is a powerful enough blower for most residential applications, but if you are pushing the 45 minute mark with the blower, take a break and let the unit cool down for about 10 to 20 minutes. Your blower will thank you by lasting longer.
by Joe, Product Expert
Q: I am looking for a blower/vacuum (preferably electric) that is powerful enough to pickup locust tree pods. Would the Toro 51609 do this.
by Verlin Blum from Idaho on November 03, 2013

A: Verlin,

Locust Pods are rather large and from what I can remember the skin is either crisp and hard when dry, or quite leathery when fresh.

You are not going to be able to find any type of handheld vacuum that could handle these pods. You would have to invest in a nice tow or walk behind sweeper, or a pretty pricy litter/lawn vacuum.

Q: which is better to move leaves from grass and bushes

Black and Decker BV3800 12 amp or Toro Ultra 51609

What is your opinion about Husqvarna 125B ?

by Gustv Freedman from Massachusetts on November 02, 2013

A: Gustav,

I feel you will have a more success using the Black and Decker BV3800 over the TORO 51609 moving leaves from your grass to your bushes. The main enemy of the corded units is the thinking that since these units are corded, they will run forever. You have to give them a bit of a break to cool down.

I am a huge fan of the Husqvarna 125B. It is lightweight, and powerful. It really makes a perfect residential gas blower option.
by Joe, Product Expert
Q: Consumer Reports recommneds this blower which has been improved over its predecessors. Are there any more problems with burned out motors with the latest version of the 51609 model? Would you recommend this blower or is there another one you would highly recommend for a small property? Thanks.
by Bernadette Gill from New Jersey on October 05, 2013

A: Bernadette,

If you legitimately have a smaller residential property, this Toro blower works great. I haven't heard too many issues about this blower at all, and as long as you give the blower about a 20 minute rest every 45 minutes of use, you shouldn't have any problem with the machine overheating.

Many people treat these machines like their gasoline counterparts and will over run them. Let this unit cool and it will last.

The Toro 51609 Ultra electric leaf blower is powerful and effective, and can actually make your work a lot easier to finish up quickly.

The Toro 51609 features a variable speed 12 amp electric motor, and will produce air speeds up to 235 mph. This means you can use low speeds to clear off hard surfaces and clean up tight areas without making a mess and without sacrificing the blower's high-speed functionality.

The Toro 51609 is also a leaf vacuum, and will convert from blower to vacuum... more

Very Pleased!!!
After raking leaves for weeks and got tired of raking, I purchase another brand and was highly irritated in attempting to put the vacuum/blower together. It seemed like I vacuumed over an area for several minutes and picked up hardly anything!! Frustrated I went to Home Depot and looked at the Toro blower vacuum and could not believe the price for such a quality item. I purchased this unit and within 1 hour did over 3/4's of my lawn. I have no complaints with this item,
Pros: Easy To Use, Fast, High Quality, This Far Exceeded My Expectations After Buying Black Decker
Cons: I Have Not Found Any Cons

It Works Great. I Would Highly Recommend This.
This product has a lot of power. and we have a lot of leaves. It was great to blow the leaves into piles, but it was too damp to vacuum. We're very happy with this blower. We'll check out the vacuum in a couple of days.

Stopped By Pine Cones!
I have a white pine tree. When I vacuum, the pine cones stop up the vacuum. I had the old gas Toro. This one looks the same, but it's not! I read the manual and it clearly states, DO NOT vacuum rocks or PINE cones!

Can you buy a similar one that will work?

The Toro blower and vacuum are strong and will do the job, if you stay away from the pine cones!
Dennis Recommends This Toro Product
Joe, the Leaf Blower Expert
Product Expert
Dennis,
For larger debris like pine cones, we recommend using a lawn sweeper (tow-behind ideally) or a larger walk-behind or tow-behind litter vacuum. Hand vacuums are generally designed for leaves, grass clippings, and other small debris of this sort.

If you would like to speak with us in more detail about a model that's best suited for your needs, give us a call at (888) 560-6929 or take a look at our Lawn Vacuum Buyer's Guide.

Quality Unit
Had a Craftsman many years ago and it had a plastic impeller. Must have returned it at least 3 times before Sears finally refunded my money.

Purchased this Toro for the METAL impeller and it seems to work fine. Not too happy with the speed control. Switch is way too sensitive and needs to be a lot less sensitive.

Great Combo
The power this blower has is phenomenal. The vacuum attachment leaves alot to be desired. It plugged up way too much when trying to suck up a pile of leaves.

Maybe it would be better if you were vacuuming small areas, like around a foundation. I got it late in the season, so next spring and fall I will be able to give it a run for its money. All-in-all, it's a great value for a kit with so much to offer.

Powerful
I had a smaller blower that didn't clear up my leaves and other debris. When I first used this, it blew so hard that I had to turn it down not to tear up my flowers and grass. It did the work for me and cut a lot of time off the raking.

It mulches great and has saved me from a lot of bags to put out in the recycle bag, because I was able to use the clippings for ground covering.

Good Power And Convenience
A reputable brand blower/vac made by Toro has good power and is easily assembled. The vacuum attachments are a bit bulky and awkward to use, but they work and is a positive feature. I bought a long heavy extension cord which I wouldn't do again as it makes using the blower more cumbersome.
Pros: High Quality, Features, I'd Buy It Again, More Powerful Than Others
Cons: Adjusting The Power Setting, Vacuum Apparatus Bulky

Great Blower/vac. Poor Quality Motor.
My Toro electric blower/vac is just 2 years old and has around 15 or less total hours on it. After blowing leaves for just over an hour a few days ago, the motor started to smell hot. I turned the blower off to let it cool & now it will not start again. Checked blower & there was nothing blocking the intake. Its a great product with a poor quality motor.
Pros: Features, Light Weight, Easy To Use, Quiet
Cons: Motor Burned Out After Only Around 12hrs Of Total Use

I Need A Debris Vacum Also.
I bought the leaf blower because it both blew the leaves off the porch and driveway and vacumed the leaves out of the enclosed atrium. I cannot understand the instructions for having it as a leaf vacum and able to clean up an enclosed area.

My wife passed away and I have had recent strokes. I cannot figure out to have as a vacum cleaner for the enclosed area. Do yo have simple instructions to covert the leaf blower to a vacum?

Thanks in advance,

Best Corded Blower Availible
I previously had the earlier version of this blower, the model 51591. I used it extensively for 10 years, as both a blower and vac. At one point I had to replace the impeller, but that was about it. Early this year the small plastic tab that actuates the safety switch for the impeller cover broke, and then later the motor failed, so it was finally time to replace it. I no longer use the vacuum function very much, though it worked very well, but I thought it was more efficient just to rake, so... more

Poor Quality
Bought the unit 11/21/12. Haven't used it much. Won't turn off, need to unplug it every time. Part where bag attaches to unit is very flimsy plastic and broke, now bag won't stay on. Bag broke where it attaches to the adapter, at the top of the zipper and at the bottom corner under the zipper. Zipper also jammed and broke at the bottom.
Have had a lawn mower for over 7 years, use all the time and have never replaced the bag. It has no holes and works fine.

I Bought The Model 51609
I have used the vacuum part 4 times and so far it has worked very well. In reading other reviews I saw some mention the bag being hard to empty and I have not found that the case. I don't know if my unit is an upgrade and the previous units were made different. The vac has plenty of suction even on wet leaves. The only thing I noticed is that some of the leaves are not ground up as much, but they all burn in the end. I have not used it as a blower yet but the vacuum works very well.

Electric Leaf Blower
The Electric Toro leaf blower works great without the smoke and noise of a gasoline-powered unit. I'm very happy with it and the service I got from Leaf Blowers Direct.

I used it one time, and can see where the bag is starting to rip, will not last very long, not happy with this product at all.

Lowest Speed Not Low Enough
A large part of my decision to purchase this high end item was the continuous speed adjustment feature. This is negated by the fact that the lowest blower speed is not low enough. This makes it very difficult to "corral" the leaves into a corner etc. At the lowest speed it is shooting the leaves up into the air/all over the place.
Pros: Durable
Cons: Difficult To Use, The Lowest Speed Is Not Low Enough, The Lowest Speed Is Not Low Enough, It Is Difficulst To Change Parts

Well Worth The Money
What a excellent product Toro has made! The blower is more powerful than I expected. Havent used the mulcher as of yet, but I"m sure it will do the job I need it to perform.
Recommend this blower to anyone. Cant get one at a better price, and quality.

I purchased two of these blowers. Both had electrical problems. The first one had an issue with the speed adjustment dial. The first one vibrated so bad that the dial turned from one setting to another on its own. The second one would not shut off, after it was used many times.

Mulching Feature Poor
I used this power blower/vac/mulcher on leaves that were only slightly damp and not compacted at all. The blower was satisfactory, but I had purchased it for its mulching feature. The vacuum was adequate, but its ability to shred/mulch was very disappointing.

When I emptied the bag the first time, the leaves were mostly still whole, some crunched with a little shredding. I dumped out the bag and put them through the vacuum/mulcher a second time, and then a third time. They were slightly... more

2 Broke In 2 Years
I bought 2 of these in 2 years. I only have a small yard so use was minimal. Great price and worked great but both died after one year of use. Gears seem to have burned because I heard a grinding sound and smell burn just before both died. Would not buy another one.
Pros: Easy To Use, Price, Easy To Store
Cons: Low Quality, Unreliable, Durability, Both Burned Out After Minimal Use

It Is Decent
You need to wear ear protectors when using this equipment. The only recommendation I would like the Toro folks to take is to make it easier to empty the contents that are in the bag.

It might make it easier if they put the zipper at the bottom of the bag instead on the side.

It Worked Great, While It Worked!
Bought the 51609 model about 3-4 years ago. Love the way it worked. That's because last weekend, it stopped working! I was mulching some leaves in our yard and turned it off to empty the bag. Re-attached the bag and turned it back on - NOTHING! I thought the plug had disconnected. Went inside and it was still plugged in. Went back outside and tried it again - NOTHING! Hooked up a hedge trimmer to the cord and it worked. Hooked up the TORO - NOTHING! Was told by a local repair shop... more

Awkward To Use
Even though the reviews were great, I found that it was heavy more like bulky especially when you are doing leaves for several hours. The leaf bag is flimsy and zip broke on the 2nd round of mulching. It was also very difficult to remove the bag for emptying AND the vacuum/mulching tubes I think are too wide and long. Awkward to use.
I spent double the time trying to clear leaves from the tube.
On the plus side, its quieter and has a good variable speed BUT after the 3rd use, I returned the... more

Just Loved It
I owned an older and smaller Toro leaf blower and I was quite happy with it, until I tried the Toro 51609. It is like having a hurricane in your hands.

Very glad to have one.

My Anniversary Gift!!
I live in California. Although Fall is my favorite time of year, I dread having to rake all the leaves. My husband surprised me with this Toro leaf vacuum. I know it sounds crazy- but I was so excited to receive this gift.

The leaves have begun to fall and I'm busy using my new gift. I love it! Although, it is a little cumbersome and it does get a little heavy for me when the bag gets full.

I would recommend it to anyone.

It's A Leaf Blower Too?
I have used this unit for 3 or 4 years to vacuum and chop leaves and yard waste to make compost. Gas blower/vacs just don't hold up to the dirty work.

Small engines and excessive dust just don't match. But the Toro is awesome!!

Toro 51609
I purchased this blower based upon P.E.D. information and the TORO reputation. The blower was delivered in only a few days and it arrived in perfect condition. I have used the blower for several weeks and so far I'm truly satisfied with the quiet operation and the power of the unit. I haven't used the vacuum yet but if that function works as well as the blower, I will be totally satisfied.

Iris Bed
I needed something to help me clear out leaves from my iris bed. Irises are very sensitive to moisture, so the rhizomes need to be kept as dry as possible. One way is to scoop them out on your hands and knees, but vacuuming them is so much better.

On the con side, I do wish that the nozzle opening were a little smaller to get in between the fronds easier.
