If you've got a lot of leaves and small debris to clean up, and you want them removed and disposed of, a lawn vacuum is for you.
Unlike leaf blowers that just move leaves around, a lawn vacuum picks them up and collects them in an easily removable bag. As a result, lawn vacuums will leave your lawn looking cleaner.
For those of us with bad backs or little stamina, there are self-propelled models. And when you're done, there's no need to scoop the collected leaves into a garbage bag. Just detach the collection bag and dump them where you want them.
Walk-Behind Lawn & Litter Vacuums
Lawn vacuums are used to pick up fallen leaves, small twigs and branches, and sometimes debris.
Often times, a lawn vac will also mulch the collected debris into tiny particles, allowing you to pick up more leaves before you need to empty the bag.
Some types of litter vacs and multi-purpose vacs can actually pick up bottles, cans, nuts and many other types of trash and debris in addition to leaves and twigs.
The more powerful litter vacs and multi-purpose vacs may not mulch or pulverize what they suck up, but the collection bags are normally very large so can clean up larger areas before having to stop and empty the bag.
Lawn & litter vacs are perfect for sucking up all the fallen leaves and debris strewn across your lawn. However, they cannot handle or mulch large twigs and branches.
If you have lots of these in your yard, choose a chipper shredder vac. They're equipped with a separate opening and larger blades to mulch branches and other wood. Instead of just collecting everything, chipper shredder vacuums mulch wood,
reducing it to up to 1/16th its original size.
Push lawn vacuums only move if you're pushing them. The engine powers the vacuum, but not the wheels.
The engines in self-propelled vacuums still power the vacuum, but also propel the front wheels, making operation less strenuous.
For hilly terrain, or to reduce fatigue, choose a self-propelled lawn vacuum.
From a versatility stand-point, one of the best options is a detachable hose. Normally, the lawn vac acts just like a mower, sucking up what you guide it over. However, not all leaves and debris can be driven over.
That's when the detachable hose comes in handy. To clean leaves from under bushes, stairs, a deck or even from a tight corner, you can take the hose by hand and get into those hard-to-reach places.
